Beyond Words: Breaking Communication Barriers with Python

A featured talk at PyConES 2025 on building accessible tools with Python and NLP to support Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems

Communication is fundamental to participation and inclusion, yet not everyone can rely on spoken language. People with intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum conditions, cerebral palsy, or other communication challenges often depend on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems to express themselves and interact with the world. Pictograms play a central role in these systems.

In this talk, I presented PictoMaker, a Python-based application I designed and implemented to automate and simplify pictogram-based communication. The project aims to reduce the manual effort typically required to work with pictograms and to make AAC tools more accessible in educational, family, and therapeutic settings.

The presentation explored how pictograms support cognitive accessibility and how modern AI techniques — including NLP and predictive language models — can be applied to anticipate words, simplify language, and assist users in constructing messages more efficiently.

Beyond the technical aspects, the talk focused on the motivation behind the project, the engineering and design challenges encountered, and the real-world impact of building inclusive tools. The audience response was highly positive, with strong engagement, numerous questions, and interest in both the technical approach and its social implications.

Following the talk, I have been in active conversations about extending PictoMaker in collaboration with professionals in AAC, special education, and related fields. These discussions aim to evolve the project beyond a technical prototype and explore its application in real educational and therapeutic contexts.

For a deeper dive into the motivation, architecture, and technical decisions behind PictoMaker, the accompanying article provides additional context and implementation details.
