Python Workshop by ETC & Cisco IT
An introductory Python program for Cisco employees
The Python Workshop by ETC & Cisco IT was an internal educational initiative aimed at teaching core Python concepts to Cisco employees with little or no prior programming experience. I took part in the design and creation of the first edition of the workshop, helping shape both its structure and its technical content.
The goal of the program was to provide a clear, practical, and approachable introduction to Python, lowering the barrier to entry while maintaining technical rigor and hands-on learning.
Program Structure
The workshop was designed around three fundamental pillars to maximize learning effectiveness:
Sessions
Each week, participants attended an instructor-led session focused on a specific set of Python concepts. Sessions combined:
- Conceptual explanations
- Live demos
- Practical examples
- Time for questions and discussion
All slides and session recordings were made available after each class, allowing participants to review the material at their own pace.
Exercises
For every session, participants were provided with a hands-on notebook, enabling them to immediately apply what they had learned. The exercises were designed to reinforce key ideas incrementally and build confidence through practice.
Assignments
In addition to guided exercises, each module included scorable assignments. These allowed participants to:
- Validate their understanding
- Practice independently
- Track their progress throughout the program
Curriculum
The content was structured into seven progressive sessions, moving from fundamentals to more advanced basics:
-
Introduction to Python
Programming fundamentals, what Python is, and how to get started. -
Data Types
Variables, built-in data types, operators, and user input. -
Conditionals
Booleans, comparison operators, and conditional statements (if,else). -
Flow Control
Loops, therange()function,whileloops, andforloops. -
Lists
Lists in depth, indexing, slicing, and the relationship between lists and strings. -
Collections
Tuples, dictionaries, sets, and an introduction to themathlibrary. -
Functions and Exceptions
Defining functions, type casting, and exception handling.
The curriculum was intentionally paced to accommodate participants with diverse technical backgrounds, ensuring accessibility without oversimplification.
Impact
The workshop helped introduce Python to a broad audience within Cisco, fostering technical curiosity and empowering employees to engage with automation, scripting, and problem solving using code.
